Just like magic

“Just like magic, only real.” That’s the clever advertising line on a beer commercial. What? That has a nice ring, it sounds catchy and cool. I was stunned by the simplicity and clarity of 5 words used to sell a bud.

How many times have we experienced things that we thought were “out of this world” or surprising or hard to believe? We could have said, it was magical, but how could that be, when it was happening in our real lives!

Magic is defined as the use of means (as charms or spells) believed to have supernatural power over natural forces like magic rites or incantations or
an extraordinary power or influence seemingly from a supernatural source like something that seems to cast a spell : enchantment or the art of producing illusions by sleight of hand. The synonyms are : bewitchery, bewitchment, conjuring, devilry, diablerie, enchantment, ensorcellment, mojo, necromancy, sorcery, thaumaturgy, voodooism, witchcraft, witchery, wizardry.

Mermaids are magical.
WOW, I don’t think of “magical” as having anything to do with evil or wizardry or sorcery or the devil. Heavens!! The term makes me think of good fortune, unusually good luck, a view of life that elevates the ordinary to the extraordinary. It’s when wonderful things happen with no scientific explanation. The whole view has changed with Disney. Mickey Mouse uses his “wand” but we all know it’s make believe. Fantasy and magic meld well. When something so fabulously good falls into our laps, we say…wow, that just “fell out of the sky” or “came out of nowhere”.
On the other hand, magical thinking is thinking that one’s thoughts by themselves can bring about effects in the world or that thinking something corresponds with doing it. It is a type of causal reasoning that looks for meaningful relationships of grouped phenomena between acts and events. It can lead to an irrational fear of performing certain acts or having certain thoughts and assuming a correlation with the acts and threatening calamities. Black magic or voodoo? No. We don’t believe in spells and such. Or do we? I don’t want to, because it gives credence to negativity or fears. Alternatively, haven’t we accepted the wisdom of “as a man thinketh, so he is”.
  • A man is literally what he thinks, his character being the complete sum of all his thoughts.
  • Cherish your visions. Cherish your ideals. Cherish the music that stirs in your heart, the beauty that forms in your mind, the loveliness that drapes your purest thoughts, for out of them will grow all delightful conditions, all heavenly environment, of these, if you but remain true to them your world will at last be built.
  • The soul attracts that which it secretly harbors, that which it loves, and also that which it fears. It reaches the height of its cherished aspirations. It falls to the level of its unchastened desires – and circumstances are the means by which the soul receives its own. (James Allen, As a Man Thinketh, 1902)
Abra ca dabra. Pulling rabbits out of hats. David Copperfield on stage. What kind of magic are we talking about? Avatar? Harry Potter’s wand? Fairies?
Did we believe that Samantha in “Bewitched” the 70’s TV show really twitched her nose and confused Mrs. Kravitz or kept Darren on edge? No, it was “make believe”.
Is there anything wrong with being like a kid and believing in Santa?
We all know Santa isn’t “real” or wearing a red suit and flying about in the snow, but we like the concept of giving and caring through gifts.
“Just like magic, only real.”
Isn’t that where the spirit of magic is born? Within our own imagination? Aren’t we responsible for the magicalness of our lives or the way we perceive magic?

Do you believe in magic?

Have you heard the song that was on the “B” track, or “other side of the 1965 45 record” that the Loving Spoonfuls played their hit Do You Believe in Magic?

Listen to the British group of teenagers singing these lyrics……
Do you believe in magic in a young girl’s heart How the music can free her, whenever it starts And it’s magic, if the music is groovy It makes you feel happy like an old-time movie I’ll tell you about the magic, and it’ll free your soul But it’s like trying to tell a stranger ’bout rock and roll
If you believe in magic don’t bother to choose If it’s jug band music or rhythm and blues Just go and listen it’ll start with a smile It won’t wipe off your face no matter how hard you try Your feet start tapping and you can’t seem to find How you got there, so just blow your mind Ohh, talking ’bout magic
Do you believe like I believeDo you believe in magic Do you believe like I believeDo you believe, believer Do you believe like I believe Do you believe in magic {Fade} If you believe in magic, come along with me We’ll dance until morning ’til there’s just you and me And maybe, if the music is right I’ll meet you tomorrow, sort of late at night And we’ll go dancing, baby, then you’ll see How the magic’s in the music and the music’s in me
Yeah, do you believe in magic Yeah, believe in the magic of a young girl’s soul Believe in the magic of rock and roll Believe in the magic that can set you free
No, you can’t explain it, but you know how it feels when you experience it!
