The main thing

Is your main thing

a postcard perfect view?

a picture perfect life?

 What do you live for?

Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers, the round pegs in   the square holes… the ones who see things differently — they’re not fond of rules… You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things… they push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world,
are the ones who do.
— Steve Jobs, US computer engineer & industrialist

Do you have the driving vision of Steve Jobs? Are you “crazy smart”, like Suzanne Somers? Have you ever wondered if you fit? Where you fit? How you fit? – into the grand scheme of things, in your family, in your community, in your own life?

How much space do you occupy?
How do you sync with your friends?

Each time two people get together, there is this invisible dynamic that is specific to  this particular combination.
The personality of a couple is almost always different than the personalities of the two people who make it up. It’s like there is a third person in every couple, bringing a unique set of skills, issues, and non-negotiable demands to the table.

For each of us, there should be a main thing — the thing that fuels us, that motivates us, that keeps us engaged and interested in life. The main thing could be a hobby, a career, even a relationship (though I wouldn’t advise making another person your main thing…). Your main thing could be a state of mind, a life-long dream, a career path. No matter what your main thing is, we should all strive to keep the main thing, the main thing. Easier said than done, right?  ( Positively Present)

As you know, Covey died this week after a bike accident. He summed up his philosophy in seven “unchanging principles” or habits that emphasize traits such as taking personal responsibility (“Be proactive”), having a road map or mission (“Begin with the end in mind”), finding the middle ( “Think Win Win”) and defining one’s priorities (“Put first things first”).

Is your main thing travel, seeing the world, meeting new people, adding friends to your circle, finding your passion and purpose, spending time with your family, seeing your children well adjusted and happy, giving back to society, making a medical breakthrough, reaching a life long dream or finding a dreamboat?

Think about how you spend your time, who you spend time with and if you are actually focused on “the main thing” that you have identified for yourself.  It will not be easy to keep your priorities in order. It takes a tenacious determination to keep your main thing in the forefront. But what matters most to you is naturally where you will be happy you spent most of your time and energy. Don’t waste any more time on the sidetrips, sidelines, sideshows or the things that don’t really mean that much to you. Life is short. Keep the main thing, the main thing.
