truth just is

“Truth, like gold, is to be obtained not by its growth, but by washing away from it all that is not gold.” – Leo Tolstoy

Count Lev Nikolayevich Tolstoy, known as Leo Tolstoy, is considered one of the greatest novelists of all time; he wrote 25 books, including War and Peace and Anna Karenina.

I stumbled upon this quote today and linked it with the movie trailer I saw on Saturday as I waited for the “feature premier”. The visuals were stunning and it was set in an era that intrigues me.

Anna Karenina is a 2012 drama film directed by Joe Wright that is adapted from Leo Tolstoy’s 1877 novel of the same name. It will star Keira Knightley, Jude Law, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson.

Some things defy understanding and then some things are completely understandable. I don’t know what the end of this story will be, since I never read the book and haven’t seen the movie, but I believe this will be one of the latter. Recently, I heard something else new, that is as old as time. A gentleman told me, that from a man’s experience, he has discovered that man doesn’t learn anything from his experiences. That is true of women too- this is non-gender specific!

Truth just is. There are natural laws and the truths that are passed down through spiritual guides, church teachings and the laws of man. The 10 Commandments are accepted as standard truths. The basic doctrine of “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you” is a practice that makes it easier to be a part of a community.

Have you noticed how people post “truisms” on facebook. We all have personal truths. Where do they come from?

I guess I am the first glass- always half full- an optimistic idealist with a hint of realist.:)

They come from how we have experienced and internalized external truths. One truth I can report in good faith is that we become more like the people we spend time with and we become “more so” of who we have always been over time. So, as we age, our truths become more firm and we are drawn to like minded people who express what we actually believe on a deeper level than we may even espouse. Truth is also based on perception and perception becomes our reality. So, truth just is. It is what we accept and believe right now, right here , on this day in this moment for this experience.

What happens when “the” truth or “our”truth changes? Can it change? Sure it can, because it ” just is” as long as it “just is” what we choose to trust and base our life decisions on. Can we change our minds? Absolutely. If you can’t change your mind, what else can you change? Can we be influenced by new information, new experiences and new ways of seeing “old things” or the basic principles set forth by those older and wiser than us? Absolutely. How many times do we and others rail against the accepted wisdom, like in Anna Karenina, that the end of a situation will not be nearly as pleasant as the beginning or “the wages of sin are death” or ” what is done in secret will come to light” or any number of time tested truths?

Why do we overlook the truth or reject the truth? Did your momma tell you to eat your greens? Are “greens’ now superfoods? Are we able to defy truth?

No, we are not. We cannot change it, we cannot defeat it, we cannot go around it forever. We can try and we often do, but it always comes back to haunt us in the end, because we knew! We knew and we ignored what we knew. That’s the bitter pill we will surely swallow when we have not accepted that “truth just is”.

Truth for today- music influences us and is influenced by us.

Do we measure a song’s worth by the truth it tells? What about “A little bit of Everything” by Dawes? or  Air Supply? or “Everything” by Billy Currington? Doesn’t everyone tell their truth if we listen? Listen to yourself and then others. Truth just is.
