creativity

Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary.” – Sir Cecil Beaton

Syncrhonized kite flying to Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. How many ways can we spell “C R E A T I V I T Y”? It’s everywhere and then again, finding your muse is not always easy.

The creative impulse is whimsical and often unpredictable. Capricious, even. At times, it can “behave” in a childlike fashion, demanding different lines of attention, focus and actions that are likely to result in the individual living in the throes of creativity to be “different”.

  • What is the value of creativity?
  • Why would we choose to live under its influence?
  • What is gained and what is lost?

Gains- new thought, new perspective, new energy

Losses- ordinary perspectives, being content with the “same old same old”, obscurity

Creativity inspires excitement, joy, aspiration in living. It brings pleasure that is unique to the individual who is experiencing the creative moment. Have you noticed how individual artistic expressions are?

In academic creative arts courses, often the “teacher” stands and tells students in a “sage from the stage” approach what “it” means. It could mean something completely different to the “student” of life. It may provoke different meanings than what the author was saying or the teacher thinks, and is just as valid as what any other person thinks.

There can be a myriad of interpretations and each can be equally valid, because that’s what it means to the person. But, no one can tell another what they are supposed to think when faced with a creative work, word or engagement.

Creativity comes from trust. Trust your instincts. –Rita Mae Brown

If you can’t trust yourself, who can you trust?

Creativity is a drug I cannot live without. –Cecil B. DeMille

DeMille was the archetypical film director for almost 50 years, serving as a major creative force in Hollywood from the founding of the film community until his death.  With 70 films to his personal credit, he was one of the most  successful and celebrated Oscar winning directors of all time.
