hesitating

If you wait too long to make the right decisions, it won’t matter when you do.

This National Geographic photo- titled Infinity Pool, Singapore captures that feeling of wonder. Wondering what is over the edge? What is beyond that picture perfect view? Sometimes we know the right choices,we just delay making them.

A good friend was discussing “major life decisions”. You know what those are, of course. They are anything that takes a real conscious decision and anything that we consider “life changing” or BIG. We contemplated some of our own past choices along with those of others and it all boils down to “timing”. How many relationships could have been saved if someone made a move when it mattered to someone else? How many careers could have soared if someone didn’t keep waiting on someone else to recognize their value? How many good financial decisions were lost to uncertainty or planning to do it “one day”? What if you knew that TODAY you could make just one choice that would matter for the rest of your life?

Have you ever been inspired to act and then asked yourself, “what was I thinking?”

Have you ever moved ahead in a flurry of action and the next day looked back and then looked ahead- wondering to yourself- are you sure? Do you know that feeling- the indescribable sensation of “cold feet” that signals the indecision that visits you in the middle of an impending decision? You were freely able to move forward or retreat , you just didn’t know which way you would like better. What if you knew now, what you didn’t know then? What if you knew how it all turned out? Will we ever know what might have been? Will we ever realize how timing affected the big picture? Do you believe that waiting too long to make the right decision renders it null and void?

Think about children and their wishes. They are pretty simple and we are usually in a position to grant them or deny them. I have a case that comes to mind. One little girl wished and wished for a tree house in her uncle’s back yard in the middle of the farm her grandparents owned. As an only child, only grandchild, only niece, she visited regularly.  Every adult there knew of her dreams and desires. It was not a matter of the money or the space. They all agreed it was a good idea but no one acted. She was 7, then 8, then 9, then 11, then 13 and no tree house. By 14, she had no interest or desire for it. Was it wrong to deny her? Did it matter? I think it mattered to her then. What if they built a tree house for her now? She is off at college. It’s too late to make the right decision to honor her little girl wish!

This National Geographic photo, Buffalo Race, India captures the point of seizing the opportunity, and holding on. This fellow is sure of his choice and whatever happens, he and this bull are linked in destiny….or at least long enough for a wonderful picture!!

Hind sight is 20/20.

But, is it natural to hesitate? Hesitate- pause- hold back in doubt or indecision- delay…fence-sitting, faltering, wobbling, dither, teeter, waver…

He who hesitates is lost. That phrase has been around for ages.

How many “lucky” investors were just in the right position at the right time and “saw” a lucky break in the market? Is it really all about LUCK or is it about NOT HESITATING, when you have that hunch, that feeling, that knowing, that moment of overwhelming desire for action?  Can you trust yourself to act and not look back?

The Oxford dictionary indicates it was often used to describe women.

When love once pleads admission to our hearts‥The woman that  deliberates is lost. [1713 Addison Cato iv.  i.]

It has often been said of woman that she who doubts is lost‥never  thinking whether or no there be any truth in the proverb. [1865  Trollope Can You forgive Her? ii. x.]

It’s not just the women who are faint of heart. This is a universal condition. This is far more common than we want to acknowledge or accept.

How many wonderful opportunities were lost because you hesitated? Opportunity knocks but once.
