special days

Yesterday was 12/12/12.

Some of us found it significant, some of us found it unremarkable, some of us found it “magical” and some of us found it just another Wednesday.

PHOTO: 12-12-12 is said to be an auspicious calendar number.

The big news was the Hurricane Sandy Relief Concert with Bruce Springsteen, Bon Jovi and Billy Joel singing the way to raising over $30 Million for those affected by the natural disaster that hit the Jersey Shore.

Another bit of news that felt “big” was more local and holiday oriented. A family had looked at a Christmas tree lot with three trees remaining, but no one was there for them to make the purchase. The next day, an email arrived stating that all trees remaining were “free to a good home”. As soon as the lady of the house saw the note, she jumped in her car at 8:30pm and headed back to the lot. Two trees were still there. She chose the stout pine tree and felt the Christmas spirit well up inside. What a nice remembrance and suprising gift for “magic day”, 12/12/12.

Who remembers the “tree” on Charlie Brown’s Christmas? Or can forget Lucy’s words?

Whatever words we utter should be chosen with care for people will hear them and be influenced by them for good or ill. – Buddha

There is a little story that once upon a time, a man wanted to incite anger in Buddha’s heart. He shouted scorching, painful words of insult but Buddha was still smiling. It’s said there is a powerful aura around Buddha and even if a tiger and deer were to come into that circle, they would forget their enmity. When the man gave all these harsh words, He (Buddha) didn’t take it seriously. After sometime, this man felt great pain in this heart. He was surprised “I am giving such words to Buddha, but instead of him feeling pain, why is it me feeling pain?”

Buddha asked him “Do you ever get guests in your home?. He said “yes”. “So when they come, do you offer gifts to them?”. He said “yes”. “What will you do if they don’t accept?”. The man said “who cares? I will keep them.” Buddha said “That’s what I did with you also; you offered me something(harsh words) which I didn’t accept”.

So Life is like a mirror. The words which you give will come back to you. We should be careful about what we give to others. If we become vehicles of love and give love, we will get that love back.

I heard the radio announcer say that the Hurricane Sandy concert stars called it the “We Take Care of Our Own” event. In the big scheme of things, $30 million is not even close to the $60 billion the president asked congress to approve. But the message it sends is greater. It is the sharing of hope and giving what we have to give.

Isn’t that what we expect to see with memorable events? Isn’t that what makes a day special? It’s not the “date” as much as it is the expectation or recognition that because that date is easy to remember, we will also recall all the beauty and magic that we can experience on that date.
