Biotics

Biotics are defined by Merriam Webster as “of, relating to, or caused by living organisms”.

We have all been prescribed antiBIOTICS.  They are meant to help our bodies overcome a bacterial infection that made us sick.

Defined as :  a substance produced by or a semisynthetic substance derived from a microrganism and able in dilute solution to inhibit or kill another microorganism

But, have you been prescribed preBIOTICs, proBIOTICS or postBIOTICS. Do you even know that they are?

Prebiotics- fermented foods- healthy fruits, vegetables, mushrooms and herbs

Probiotics- beneficial strains of bacteria that support your own unique gut microbiome

Postbiotics- nutrient compounds created by bacteria in our gut – vitamins, enzymes, fatty acids, fulvic acid, amino acids

Why do we need these? Sometimes antibiotic use and the modern lifestyle deplete our natural balance of healthy bacteria.

Not only are these important for regularity and digestive comfort- which everyone who has ever had indigestion or constipation will attest- but they are critical to maintaining the functioning of the second immune system found in the intestinal tract.
