What Does That Mean

If a building becomes historic when it marks 50 years of existence, does a movie become “historic” or classic at that point?

November 13,1963- on the cusp of 50 years since McClintock was released.

Fifty years ago, would anyone have blinked an eye at what is socially acceptable nowadays? You bet they would. The times were different, or were they? If you look very closely, you will see some things that have shifted from tabu to mainstream. If you notice the “family” circle that John Wayne kept working in his movies and the basic human values he espoused- you wonder how he interspersed those scintillating scenes. A woman in a feathered hat at the bottom of a mudhole, sticking pins in men’s derrieres? A woman hoisting another over her shoulder and carrying her up the stairs. A woman who could stand her ground with any man? Sounds forward thinking?

The scene that caught my eye was when Lem ( carriage driver holding Katie McClintock’s bags as she moved back in her house to be with her daughter) was told “You keep a civil tongue in your unprepossessing face!” [Maureen O’Hara (Katherine Gilhooley McLintock)]. [John Wayne (GW McClintock)] told Lem, when asked- ” what does unprepossessing mean?”, “I was once called that. I looked it up in the dictionary. You don’t want to know!”

Nondescript. Unremarkable. Not overtly impressive. Mundane. Commonplace. Plain. Drab. Humble. That does sound undesirable, but Webster’s defines it as : having no prior bias or opinion : unprejudiced a mind … entirely unprepossessed with any theory or system.

So, what something “means” is totally subjective. It is “how it is presented” and “intended” and “used” within a specific context. It is how it is received, welcomed or rejected. The “meaning” ascribed to a word or event or artistic expression or “communication” of any kind is personal and uniquely individual.

An unprejudiced mind? What a wonderful thing to have. I am quite taken with it- today!! I hope I can cultivate this, but I think it’s too late to have no prior opinion. I could try hard to have no prior bias. Or to be more open minded. Perhaps that’s what we can all do. We can try to counterbalance what we believe to be, until we are sure. Can anyone really be sure until all the facts are in? And when will we “know everything?” When our lives end and we see everything, just as it was and is and will be- forevermore. Plenty of time to learn new things and try to see old things in a new light to find “new meanings” , appreciate the “classics” and explore new territory!
